REVIEW: Coolhaus’ Milkshake & Fries

Hello, Mr. Sweet & Salty checking in. Usually I can look at a list of ingredients on a product and figure out the intended profile for myself. Habanero chips are gonna be spicy. Blue cheese flavored pretzels are gonna be funky. Chocolate covered Oreo’s are gonna be sweet. Yet sometimes, even when we know what we’re getting into, a bag of chips will push the narrative and boldy state SPICY! As common as that may be with with savory snacks, I don’t know that I’ve ever seen it with ice cream. That all changed with one of the newest flavors from Coohaus, which proudly proclaims, quite literally in a speech bubble, that this pint is in fact “sweet & salty!” Milkshake & Fries combines salted Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream with shoestring french fries and milk chocolate malt balls.

REVIEW: Ben & Jerry’s Glampfire Trail Mix

Until today I had no idea what “glamping” was, and there’s a decent chance you don’t either, so I’ll get ya up to speed. Glamping is short for “glamour camping” and is the hybrid of the lovely outdoor freshness of traditional camping and more posh resort-style hotel amenities of regular vacationing. It truly is the hypothetical best of both world’s, where you can go on a long mind-clearing hike and take a poop into something that flushes before roasting some marshmallows over an easy-to-ignite outdoor fire pit. Speaking of marshmallows, and similarly to my lack of knowledge about glamping, I had no clue Target was getting a new exclusive flavor from Ben & Jerry’s, and was stopped in my tracks when doing my daily perusing of the frozen aisle at my favorite red-clad establishment. Apparently inspired by faux-camping and uber decadent hiking snacks, Glampfire Trail Mix combines chocolate ice cream with crunchy pretzel swirls, marshmallow swirls, and fudge-covered almonds.

REVIEW: Angie’s BoomChickaPop Holidrizzle Kettle Corn (Frosted Sugar Cookie and White Chocolate & Peppermint)

One of the best parts of the holiday season is making all the foods I normally consume much much worse for me. Vegetables become pie, nuts get glazed, fruit turns into cake, and popcorn gets…holidrizzled? Whatever you want to call it – caramel corn, kettle corn, candied corn – pretty much anything covering the normally nutritionally-sound popped kernels is a staple of the season, and goddamn do I love it. A far cry from the crunchy golden corn found in the giant multi-flavored tins around Christmas, Boom Chicka Pop have a stacked lineup of sweet and salty delights to meet any of Santa’s daily requirements, including Frosted Sugar Cookie and White Chocolate Peppermint.

REVIEW: Hershey’s Gold Peanut & Pretzel

I can still remember the triumphant day that Hershey’s Cookies ‘n Creme arrived in my junk food universe. It was the mid-90’s and I was a wee lad, looking for something to mix up the brown-dominant palate of the candy aisle. Everything seemed to be chocolate based, and out of nowhere appeared a snowy beacon of hope. The white-chocolate-meets-wafer cookies bar was a revelation, and I fell in love right then and there, in 1995, and it has been one of my favorite Hershey’s branded products ever since. Fast forward 22 years later and Hershey’s are aiming to change the game yet again, and this time they’re adding a whole new dimension. Welcome to the world, the fourth member of the Hershey’s universe – it’s not milk, it’s not dark, it’s not white, it’s GOLD.

TODAY! One day only Sean E. burger at Jack’s Prime

Jack’s Prime is one of my absolute favorite burger spots. I reviewed their fantastic Gobble Gobble turkey burger last year right here on the skillet and featured them as my restaurant of choice on Check Please, Bay Area. They decided to let someone outside of their company design a signature burger for the first time ever and by some magical luck that dude is ME! I was told I could use anything I want, and after scheming a number of profiles and combos I chose to highlight some of my favorite things with Sean E’s Spooky Sweet and Salty Burger.

The sando combines a 1/3 pound angus beef patty, pulled pork, muenster cheese, garlic onion cinnamon chutney, and yellow mustard on a pretzel bun. It’s bold and complex while still being very agreeable and savory. The burger comes with a split order of half garlic half sweet potato fries, which is the combo Sil B and I always indulge in on our monthly visits to Jack’s. It’s only going to be around for one day, today, October 21, and if you’re in the area and want to taste something truly scintillating and spooky – stop into Jack’s and get your grub on!
