REVIEW: Little G’s Triple Cookie Dough

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. A now scoop shop staple available at nearly every standard ice cream shop in existence, and brought to life by Ben & Jerry’s in 1984 via an anonymous flavor suggestion in their original Burlington store. Generally combining pieces of cookie dough with a vanilla base, leave it to Little G to kick it into hyper speed and take the classic to new, bold heights. For their version of the iconic concoction, Little G takes a vanilla bean base and loads it with a triple threat of chocolate chip cookie dough, double chocolate chip cookie dough, and sugar cookie dough.

The vanilla bean ice cream is absolutely spot on. Smooth and creamy with solid sweetness and a density that feels tremendously rich and buttery. I’m always a big fan of ample vanilla bean dots and the little black specks are noticeable from the jump and add a delicious authentic vanilla flavor that balances the amount of sugar beautifully. While this pint is absolutely loaded with dough, the mix in density is spot on and the base has room to breathe (“base breathability) so you can appreciate the wonderful craftsmanship that went into the ice cream itself – something I always enjoy no matter how good the mix ins or swirls may be.

Each of the three cookie doughs in the pint have a distinct flavor and they’re all delicious. My favorite of the three is the sugar cookie dough, which cuts through the base with a prominent saltiness that plays with buttery notes and is purely fun to eat. It’s decadent and naughty and feels every bit as bad boy as eating a stick of butter dipped in sugar. The double chocolate chip cookie dough is a chocolate explosion, with a good amount of chips stuck into a solid brick of cocoa laced doughy goodness. I don’t love the cookie dough as much as Grace’s brownies, but as far as a double chocolate dough goes this is up there with the best I’ve had in ice cream, not to mention it’s far less common, so bonus points for that.

The standard chocolate chip cookie dough has a more golden flavor than the sugar dough from the use of brown sugar, and has little pieces of chocolate that give it a bit of a boosted crunch. It has the perfect cookie dough essence I want inside of ice cream and it’s like all the other doughs I’ve had but just executed perfectly. I was kind of disappointed I only had two pieces of CCCD in this pint, and I wanted a bit more of balance, but I was happy with the way the dough was able to differentiate itself on taste alone, and will take more sugar cookie over chocolate cookie any day.

The only thing I would change about this flavor is making the dough pieces a bit smaller. This is easily amended with some side of spoon cutting action, but I like the dough in tandem with the ice cream and when taking the chunks as they’re presented they dominant the bite in a way that makes it challenging to get a balanced spoon. As with all Little G ice creams this one is high quality and really fun to eat, and if you gravitate towards cookie dough at your local scoop shop you’ve gotta put this on your list when you order.

REVIEW: Little G’s Fluffer Cookie

A fluffernutter sandwich combines two of the world’s best lip-smacking creamy stick-to-the-roof-of-your-mouth ingredients that you can dig up in your grandma’s pantry – peanut butter and marshmallow fluff.  While I was always more of a traditional peanut butter and jelly kind of kid growing up and am now very much in the peanut butter and banana camp, I will never shy away from peanut butter plus anything, and I mean that quite literally.  My girlfriend recently challenged me to try peanut butter with mustard, and I did it, and guess what?  I liked it!  For the limited spring fling run of pints Little G put their own spin on the fluffernutter universe, but luckily for us all, did not include mustard.  Fluffer Cookie combines peanut butter ice cream with a marshmallow swirl and chocolate sandwich cookies.

I’m going to guess that the peanut butter ice cream itself is up to the usual Little G standards, but as is the case with some of their flavors, this one is so mix-in dense I can’t even really tell.  The peanut butter definitely takes a backseat, not only in texture but in flavor, to the insane amount of Oreo cookies smashed into the base.  What is really beautiful though, is the way the cookies have softened and taken on a dunked-in-milk kind of texture, that while it’s different than your usual melty creamy ice cream, it’s still insanely delicious and fun to eat.  Make no mistake, these aren’t just wafer cookies, these are entire Oreo’s, and the ample amount of creme filling is also present, fusing with the base and the softened wafers to create a decadent, almost cake-like experience that is delicious and downright intense.

The slightest hint of peanut flavor peeks its head through the onslaught of aggressive sweetness and cocoa creme, but most people probably wouldn’t be able to pinpoint the PB versus vanilla or sweet cream.  Composition-wise this pint is very similar to the core lineups’ Chocolate Milk & Cookies, with a bigger emphasis on the creme flavor than the chocolate because of the base switch up.

The marshmallow swirl is thick and also very intense, with a dense yet fluffy texture that is pretty much as good as it gets when it comes to an authentic and delicious marshmallow presence.  Once again Little G is up there with Salt & Straw for taking the swirl game to another level, and this one, while it tastes predominantly sweet, does have a touch of roasted flavor to it that gives it an added layer of complexity and aids in bringing out a hint more roasted peanut flavor as well.

Through and through this pint tastes like eating an ice cream-ified version of an Oreo.  The fusion of the marshmallow swirl with the cookies’ creme emulates the iconic filling, and the plethora of cocoa wafers in every bite makes the Oreo vibes absolutely inescapable.  For my personal tastes, and to be true to the tradition of the fluffernutter tag, I want a bit more peanut butter, more salty contrast, and some relief from the intensity of the sugar, but this is one of those flavors that will leave you thinking about it when your bowl is empty, and becomes dangerously addictive.

REVIEW: Little G Chocolate Milk and Cookies

For those of you not in the know about Little G Ice Cream Company, here’s a brief background.  Little G is the brainchild of Grace Connor, a 17 year old entrepreneur and cancer survivor from Boston, MA who hit the ground running in 2016 with wild ice cream flavors that broke the internet with their photogenic swirls and fresh innovation.  Unless you live in the greater Massachusetts area you have to get your Little G fix from an online order via Goldbely , and while it is pricey, it is definitely worth it.  Grace bakes all of the cakes, pies, and cookies that fill her tubs and hand makes all of the batches on the weekend while still balancing high school.

Eating Little G ice cream is a completely different experience than most.  While the usual appeal of grabbing a premium pint is a smooth rich base complimented by flavorful and texturally exciting mix ins, Little G flips the ratio on its head and delivers an insane amount of sweet, crunchy, and diverse mix ins complimented by high quality thoughtful ice cream.  Opening up a container of Grace’s creations is like unearthing the visually accurate pint of all the ice cream descriptions you’ve read and been disappointed in throughout your life.  When a label says “cookie dough” or “candy pieces” or “cookies” she really really means it, and you won’t have to look hard at all to find everything that the description promises.

Chocolate Milk and Cookies combines a chocolate ice cream with chocolate sandwich cookies and cookie dough, for a rich, decadent, chocolatey-abyss experience you will not soon forget.

Digging into the pint reveals a painters pallet of the shades of decadence.  Rich dark brown ice cream, massive tan chunks of cookie dough, and deep black Oreo cookies with the occasional white pop from a giant glop of creme filling.

The chocolate ice cream is smooth and delicious with a flavor that leans more towards milk than dark, especially when eaten in tandem with the Oreo cookies (every bite) which have a deeper more bitter cocoa-forward flavor.  You could essentially call the base ice cream “chocolate cookie” with how many Oreo’s are integrated here, as you will rarely find a bite that is just plain chocolate ice cream.  This flavor eats like a tall glass of milk that has been filled with Oreo cookies, smashed into creamy perfection, mixed, frozen, and served in a cup.

The cookie dough chunks are huge and plentiful, taking up half of the spoon as you go through gleefully.  They are very fresh and soft with a texture that gives easily as you chew and make your way to a large crunchy chocolate chip.  The pieces of dough are big and soft enough that you can break them in half and they keep their form.  The dough doesn’t have much saltiness to it but is still less sweet than the other components and leans towards a buttery savory note for some contrast.  When getting a bite with ice cream, cookie, and dough, your tastebuds are sent to chocolate cookie heaven making you wonder “am I dead?”

This ice cream is hard to stop eating.  It combines some of the best elements of sugary snacking all into one – cookies with milk, cookie dough, and chocolate, for an experience that slaps most cookies and cream flavors in the face and simply says “get outta here”.
