There aren’t too many better ways to start a morning than a piece of peanut butter banana toast. Okay, actually, there are eggs benedict, chicken fried steak, huevos rancheros, fluffy ass pancakes…I’m getting out of hand. Let me rephrase. There aren’t many simple, smart, and deliciously better ways to start a morning than the wonderful combination of peanut butter and banana. The perfect balance of fats, carbs, and flavor, they combine for a super creamy sweet and salty AM treat that remains one of my go-tos whenever I’m feeling classic (and lazy). And what better way to elevate that combo than substitute the bread for ice cream? Oh yes, it sounds divine, and Haagen-Dazs’ new Decadent Collection delivers just that with Banana Peanut Butter Chip, which combines a sweet banana ice cream with bits of chocolate chips and peanut butter ribbons.
The banana ice cream isn’t the boldest that I’ve had but it’s pretty damn good. It has a restrained sweetness akin to a fruit that has just gone from green to yellow with a bit of firmness still intact. As usual with Haagen-Dazs the texture is terrific with a rich full bodied mouthfeel and succulent meltiness that finishes with a smooth milky flavor accented by a hint of tropical fruity flare. It almost hints towards a banana sweet cream the way the dairy gets a chance to shine, and while I love being smacked in the face with banana notes, I don’t mind the way the base works with the overall profile.
The peanut butter weaves in and out of bites with the perfect creamy fatty essence and hint of saltiness to go along with some surprising extra sweetness. The gobs are of varying but pretty good size with the wonderful melt-in-your-mouth sensation that makes dipping a spoon into a jar one of my favorite recreational activites. I love the distribution of the peanut butter as it maintains a constant presence throughout the container without becoming overwhelming. If I were to be a ball-buster here I would want the PB to be a little saltier and less sweet, but that’s splitting hairs and the butter is executed nearly flawlessly.
The chocolate chips are high quality bittersweet chunks that are just the right size to add some crunch without overpowering the real stars of the show. They have a lovely sweetness that compliments both the banana and the peanut butter in a way that allows them to breathe and elevate the smoother textures they present.
Sometimes it feels like an ice cream was made for me, and this is one of those instances. Banana and peanut butter and peanut butter and chocolate will forever be two of my favorite flavor combinations, and putting them all into one frozen treat works wonders. This pint falls perfectly into my “rule of three” in that the most successful ice cream’s just take three elements and execute them with finesse, and Haagen-Dazs did that theory justice with this decadent addition to their lineup.
